What's the deal with Copart? ›

Copart is an online vehicle auction platform headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Members can bid on vehicles ranging from exotic cars to used vehicles. Copart features clean and salvage cars, SUVs, motorcycles and ATVs.

A: Copart does not sell individual parts for vehicles — only whole vehicles as-is. However, many Copart Members find the parts they need for their projects by bidding on vehicles in Copart auctions.

You can drive a car directly off the lot if you have insurance on it and have access to dealer tags. Otherwise, we recommend you either have Copart ship it to your business address or hire a third-party transporter to bring it to you.

Willis Johnson is the founder of Dallas-based Copart, a leader in online auctions for used and totaled cars; he owns about 6% of the stock. Johnson founded the company out of a single lot in Vallejo, California in 1982 after several years operating a dismantling yard near Sacramento.

Inspection is limited to vehicles currently listed for sale. Tools of any kind, including diagnostic code readers, are not allowed in the yard. See a staff member if you need assistance with a vehicle. As a safety precaution, please do not attempt to start a vehicle without a Copart employee.

On average, car dealers markup cars up to 30% that are bought at auctions. There are several reasons for this. The used cars at the auctions are not in a perfect driving condition and sometimes they won't even appeal to many bidders, that's why they are cheaper than the dealer's shops.

If you are a Premier Member, you only need to make a one-time deposit of $400 to bid up to $100,000 per day. All deposits are fully refundable if your account is in good standing and all outstanding invoices have been paid.

While Member Fees do exist at Copart, no fees are hidden from our Members, and the list can be accessed at any time. It is important for Members to educate themselves on which fees are relevant to them and what to expect before placing a bid on a vehicle.

Many Members make an above-average living in their home countries by purchasing cars on Copart, repairing them with lower-cost local labor, and then reselling them for a profit. This group of Members also includes foreign drivers looking for affordable transportation.
